How do great artists acquire mastery?

They train hard under a guru. That's the apprenticeship phase in their journey. Once they have acquired the skills, they perform as per the rulebook. They do it for years. A stage comes when they start breaking the conventional rules of the game. They create their own stuff.

The same process works for all of us in business. The cycle times may be different, but essentially the phases remain the same.
